Private Apartments in Tokyo

Posted Tuesday th 2nd o August, 2016

The first time I came to Japan, I thought I could never afford a private accommodation since I knew of Tokyo’s reputation of being “an expensive city”.

Tired of the share house life I lived during my time as a University student I was craving for a silent and solitary hideout.

Especially in a big and buzzing city like Tokyo. Being in a guest house with many unknown people was no option for me. I was fearing all the paper work in Japanese and the high initial cost my friends told me about – the key money, “thank you money”, a large deposit – I knew I couldn’t afford it.

However, there are solutions for people searching for private apartments on a tight budget. I was lucky to work part time at Tokyo Room Finder, who helped me to find a nice small apartment in the north of Tokyo. My owner is fluent in English and Japanese, therefore the paper work was all done in English.

Communication was easy and efficient. There were no high initial cost – I only paid the deposit, which was one month’s rent and the rent for the upcoming month. I also had to pay 7000 Yen for a mandatory fire insurance, however all those costs were easy to understand for me and I agreed to them by signing the contract.

I didn’t have to bother with all the other fees, which are rather confusing for me. The move-in was quick and easy, but also because I chose the 1st floor rather than the 2nd. 😉

Of course – living in a share house gives you a different experience and for people who enjoy intercultural communication and language exchange, a share house is the place to live in.

But if you rather have your own space, just like me, you might want to check out our availabilites on Tokyo Room Finder! :) Have a nice week everyone! And enjoy your Tokyo life!

Thanks for joining our 2016 BBQ!

Posted Thursday th 30th o June, 2016

No rain, a little bit of burned meat, but very lovely people – this is our resume from this years international BBQ 2016!

We held our BBQ party last Saturday in Akabane. We had around 40 people joining us, mostly from Estonia, but also from the UK, Germany, Philippines, the US and (of course) many lovely Japanese people. 🙂

Our preparation started in the morning at 10:00. Getting the drinks and food downhill was quite a challenge, but fortunately our rental tents and Barbecue grills were already prepared. In around one hour we were able to set up the drinks, fill the cooler boxes with ice and water, cut the vegetables and get the name tags ready.

The first people arrived around 12:00 and now our team had to do some multi-tasking: collect the money from the arriving people, explain the games, put the meat on the grill and refill the cold drinks. However, our guests were very helpful and therefore the whole event went very smoothly. 😉 We had sausages, chicken, beef and pork prepared, as well as a big seafood and vegetable mix plate. Bread, cucumber, carrots and paprika was served for the guests who had to wait for the next load of fresh grilled meat. 😉

We were lucky with the weather, however it was quite hot, so we had a hard time to keep the drinks cold. But drinking the beer a bit faster than usual helped to get the refreshment. 😉 We had actually two games prepared. One game was a memory card game, which required all the guests to participate. However, we had not all people showing up the day, therefore we had to cancel the game on short notice. So we decided to play Bingo at the end of our BBQ.

We gathered all the people around our blue sheet and the winner received a bottle of champagne. Another highlight was our “Toss the boot” game, which is as easy as it sounds. Our participants had to throw a rain boot as far as they could. The two winners got different prizes and were chosen by our jury.

The official ending of the party was around 16:00, however some people decided to stay with us a little longer to finish the last snacks and drinks. We left the place around 19:00, when it already got dark, which gave the whole event space a very different atmosphere.

The whole BBQ was a blast and we really enjoyed talking to each and all of you guys. We will share the photos of the event with you soon, our photographer is still editing and uploading them to his Dropbox! As soon as we can share them with you, we will upload a link on our blog and on our Facebook event.

Sign up on our newsletter for upcoming events and don’t miss our next parties. 😉 We plan our next big event in October, so stay tuned!

Thank you all for the great event and we hope you will have a wonderful summer!

We will celebrate together with our Estonian friends St. John’s Eve!

Intl' Friendly BBQ! June 27th 2015

Posted Friday th 12th o June, 2015

We will be gathering at Akabane, exact time will be announced later.
In case of rain this event will be rescheduled to July 4.

Fee: 2,500 yen

There will be fish, chicken and meat prepared. Fresh salad, bread, fruits. Drinks as beer, vine, juice and water.
We will have games and music, food and drink, join to enjoy the international gathering in the best way possible.

Need another reason :D

St John's Eve (Jaaniõhtu, also Jaanilaupäev) and St John's Day (Jaanipäev) also referred to as Midsummer in the Northern hemisphere, the most important days in the Estonian calendar, apart from Christmas. The short summer seasons with long days and brief nights hold special significance for the people of Estonia. Jaanipäev is celebrated in the night between June 23 and 24, a few days after the summer solstice, when the night seems to be non-existent.

On Jaaniõhtu, Estonians all around the country will gather with their families (could easily be international one :D) , or at larger events to celebrate this important day with singing and dancing (yes we do that other than in Estonian as well), as Estonians have done for centuries.

Understandably, some of the rituals of Jaanipäev have very strong folkloric roots. The best-known Jaanik, or midsummer, ritual is the lighting of the bonfire and then jumping over it. This is seen as a way of guaranteeing prosperity and avoiding bad luck. Likewise, to not light the fire is to invite the destruction of your house by fire. The fire also frightened away mischievous spirits who avoided it at all costs, thus ensuring a good harvest. So, the bigger the fire, the further the mischievous spirits stayed away.
Since we are not in Estonia lest try not to burn down any
nearby villages :S ...
(why Estonia, we have some of them in our team :D)

We will be gathering at Akabane, exact time will be announced later.
In case of rain this event will be rescheduled to July 4.

Fee: 2,500 yen

There will be fish, chicken and meat prepared. Fresh salad, bread, fruits. Drinks as beer, vine, juice and water.

Guest list is limited to 40 people.
To participate please fill the simple contact form http://goo.gl/mFozRX
it is necessary for us to prepare the food and drinks. Thank you!

EarthSky's meteor shower -Orionids-

Posted Monday th 19th o October, 2009

It is time to see the sky. From October 19th to October 23rd.
These meteors tend to be fast, occasionally leaving persistent trains and producing bright fireballs. They exhibit a maximum of about 15 meteors per hour. If you trace these meteors backwards, they seem to originate from the north of Orion’s bright ruddy star Betelgeuse. The Orionids have a broad and irregular peak that is difficult to predict.
Fortunately, it will be only a few days past new moon, ensuring dark skies for this year’s Orionid shower. More meteors tend to fly after midnight, and the Orionids are typically at their best in the wee hours before dawn. The best viewing time will probably be one to two hours before dawn on October 21. However, this shower is known to have several maxima which are not especially predictable, so a few days before or after the expected peak may offer a good meteor display.

TSUKIMI 2009

Posted Friday th 2nd o October, 2009

Did you know about Tsukimi? Tsukimi (月見), (sometimes written as Otsukimi) literally moon-viewing, refers to Japanese festivals honoring the autumn moon. The celebration of the full moon typically takes place on the 15th day of the eighth month of the traditional Japanese lunisolar calendar; the waxing moon is celebrated on the 13th day of the ninth month. These days normally fall in September and October of the modern solar calendar.

The Tsukimi custom was originally borrowed from the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. The tradition is now so popular in Japan that some people repeat the activities for several evenings following the appearance of the full moon during the eighth lunisolar month.

Tsukimi traditions include displaying decorations made from Japanese pampas grass (susuki) and eating rice dumplings called Tsukimi dango in order to celebrate the beauty of the moon. Seasonal produce are also displayed as offerings to the moon. Sweet potatoes are offered to the full moon, while beans or chestnuts are offered to the waxing moon the following month. The alternate names of the celebrations, Imomeigetsu (literally "potato harvest moon") and Mamemeigetsu ("bean harvest moon") or Kurimeigetsu ("chestnut harvest moon") are derived from these offerings.

Solar Eclipse 2009

Posted Sunday th 1st o March, 2009

On July 22, 2009, the longest total eclipse of the 21st century will pass over Asia. The eclipse will have its peak duration over southern Japan, and will be visible from the Tokara Islands, Yakushima and Amami Oshima. Partial eclipses will be visible throughout the country.

Yakushima is a subtropical island off the southern coast of Kyushu and part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of Japan's oldest living trees. Trees more than 1000 years old are affectionately called yakusugi (a combination of Yakushima and the Japanese word for cedar, sugi), the most ancient of which may be over 7000 years old. The island's cedar forests were logged extensively throughout history. Their most common use was to make cedar shingles during the Edo Period. Today the forests are a national park and some areas were declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1993. Yakushima has become a destination for people who love nature and the outdoors, with lots of hiking, camping and nature watching all around the island. However there are many hotels and restaurants along the island's well developed coast, so you can rough it during the day yet spend your nights in comfort.

For those unable to reach the regions of total eclipse, partial eclipses will be visible throughout the rest of Japan. The period of partial eclipse will last two to three hours, with effects becoming more dramatic as the sun becomes more obscured. In Japan's various cities different peak obscurations will occur at different times.
Appropriate caution must be exercised when observing the partial eclipse. Serious damage can be done to the eye if the sun is observed directly or through sun glasses, even when no pain is felt. Instead, special sun filters must be used. The eclipse can be viewed with the naked human eye only during total eclipse.

Summer Hints: Summer rock festivals offer different vibes

Posted Tuesday th 8th o July, 2008

With summer music festivals becoming an increasingly popular part of the music calendar around the world, every year sees tough competition to attract the best established acts and to showcase rising talent. As well as competing against each other, Japan's two premier events, three-day Fuji Rock Festival and two-day Summer Sonic, also compete to maintain year--on--year quality and to provide lineups that compare favorably with previous years.

Last year's Fuji Rock, the 11th, had a number of high points. Friday saw the Cure's triumphant return to Japan after 23 years, supported by Muse, reputedly rock's hottest live band. Saturday saw New York legends Iggy and The Stooges and the Beastie Boys, supported by Kaiser Chiefs and Kula Shaker.

While for many festival-goers Sunday was the climax, as Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra set up a good vibe, preparing the way for festival favorites The Chemical Brothers to unleash their big beat electro groove. And this was just the main Green Stage. The smaller stages saw performances by Groove Armada, Lily Allen, and Fountains of Wayne, among others. read more...
